The Studio
IMA is a studio run by people who want to create.
The best things we've made started as someone messing around with an idea that wasn't on the brief yet. We've built the whole studio around keeping that possible.
The story
We started with music.
IMA began as a sound studio. Andreas Kübler, Sebastian Kübler, and Xaver Willebrand founded it in Paderborn in 2009: three musicians who had met online and found something worth saying together through sound.
The first landmark commission was the Krake roller coaster at Heide Park in 2011: a complete audio identity for one of Germany's most ambitious new rides, and the largest project IMAscore had taken on up to that point. It was the beginning of a working relationship with the theme park industry that would shape everything that followed.
The work accumulated. European market leader in amusement park audio by 2014. Film and video game trailer work began in 2016: Disney, Warner Bros., Activision. World market leader in amusement park music by 2017. In 2018, the teaser for Disney's ‚The Lion King‘ launched with IMA's score and reached 224.6 million views in its first 24 hours.
In 2014, IMAmotion was founded. The first step toward the bigger picture — literally. By adding visual media to the portfolio, IMAmotion and IMAscore have been able to cover all aspects of media content production, from attraction logos to pre-show films. The threads of storytelling slowly came into the hands of fewer people, allowing for a more coherent design approach.
Because what those years also produced was harder to put on a résumé. When you're scoring or capturing a world, you learn how a world is built: not just how it sounds, but the relay of decisions between concept studios, production houses, and construction companies. And you learn, in detail, what gets lost at each handoff.
The media work had made the problem visible: concept design, media production, and physical construction needed to belong to one creative team. IMAmotion was the answer, so the brief that gets written in month one is still the one being built in month eighteen.
But for this, IMAmotion had to be reinvented. Alongside IMAscore's Xaver Willebrand, theatre-trained Patrick Kerner, civil engineer Andrea Willebrand, and generalist Pierre Reinhardt came together to found a new and lasting version of the company in 2022. Today, IMA works across theme park scores and trailer music, themed environment design, media production, and full physical fabrication. The question behind all of it is the same one it has always been: what should this feel like, and how do we make it feel that way?
Today, Xaver, Andrea, and Patrick lead the team into new endeavors, telling all those little stories worth telling in ways that bring adventure, fun, scares, and wonder — or whatever emotion you want your guests to feel. Because in the end, it's all about going on a journey you never expected when you close the door behind you and enter a world where everything seems possible.
How we work
We call it play
For us, the ideal approach to any project has to feel like play, because that is the most honest description of what actually produces interesting ideas. Play is how a concept becomes something no guest expected.
In practice: we listen first. We ask questions that feel off-topic but aren't. We sketch before we plan. We let IMAscore's acoustic thinking shape what IMAmotion designs, and we let IMAmotion's spatial thinking change what the score needs to do. The best projects happen when neither discipline stays in its lane — and what comes out is usually something neither could have produced alone.
We don't narrow early. We'd rather find the unexpected angle in a concept session than give you the answer you already expected. And we're still genuinely curious about the problem in week four.

Conversations from the studio
Our team sits down with people who build themed experiences — designers, directors, producers, and the occasional person who worked on something you've probably been to. The conversations go further than the brief suggests: how sound shapes spatial memory, what opening day actually looks like from the production side, why some experiences stay with guests for years and others are forgotten before the car park.
